Birdseeds Surprised by Sunflower Intentions
VANCOUVER - Mar 30/13 - SNS -- Birdseed ingredient markets were somewhat surprised by the sunflower seeding intentions for the United States, which foresee a net drop in plantings.
If farmers stick with their intentions, land in oil-type sunflower will fall 16% to 1.4 million acres, while confectionary sunflower area rises 9% to 285,000 acres.
The problem facing sunflowers was underscored by the USDA's March 31 stocks in all positions estimates. Total inventory is up 31% over last year at 1.19 billion pounds.
