11% More U.S. Lentils Grown

WASHINGTON - Nov 9/12 - SNS --Lentil production in the United States was pegged at 5.25 million cwt (100 pound units) or 328,320 metric tons (MT) in the latest crop production estimates compiled by the USDA.

This is an 11% improvement on last year's crop and just ahead of the previous five-year average U.S. lentil harvest of 227,116 MT.

Area for harvest is forecast at 450,000 acres, up 9% from the previous year. Average yield is expected to be 1,168 pounds per acre, up 17 pounds from 2011.

In Montana, the crop was 98% planted by mid-May, compared with last year's 44%. By July 22, 99% of the crop was blooming. Crop condition in mid-August was rated mostly fair to good. Roughly 95% of the crop was harvested by September 2.
