Mixed Finish in Birdseeds

VANCOUVER - Jun 30/12 - SNS -- Birdseed ingredient markets finished the week on a mixed note in response to seeded area estimates form the USDA and Statistics Canada.

On Friday, the USDA reported a steep drop in white proso millet plantings in the United States, along with smaller than hoped for increases in oil-type and confection sunflower plantings, and reduced safflower area.

The USDA said land in oil-type sunflower rose 16% to 1.74 million acres, while confectionary sunflower area jumped 22% to 308,500 acres. Even so, this is the second smallest area for confectionary sunflower seed in North Dakota since 1970.
