Turkey Expects Large Sunseed Expansion

WASHINGTON - Mar 22/12 - SNS -- Sunflower seed production is expected to expand this year in Turkey as farmers respond to excellent price prospects for the crop, believes the U.S. agricultural attache for the country.

"In spite of the slight increase in area to 490,000 hectares, sunflower seed production for 2011 remained about 925,000 metric tons (MT), as dry weather conditions during the summer adversely affected yields," the U.S. agricultural attache reports.

Area and production in 2010 were 485,000 hectares and 1 million MT. Projected high returns in for sunflower seed production is expected to persuade farmers to increase planting in 2012 to about 525,000 hectares and productions is expected to reach 1.05 million MT. Continued snow during the winter months in Thrace region will provide optimum moisture during planting.
