Few Changes in Birdseeds

VANCOUVER - Feb 10/12 - SNS -- North American birdseed ingredient markets finished the week's trading little changed in relatively light trading interest.

Both growers and end users remain reluctant participants at current values, making it hard for markets to find a way to stimulate either group.

Commenting on markets, the U.S.-based National Sunflower Association said, "Given the small 2011 US sunflower crop, processors are actively bidding for 2012 acres. Sunflower seed stocks will be extremely tight by the end of this market year and demand for all sunflower products remains strong.

"A drier than normal fall coupled with a mild relatively dry winter has many producers considering planting sunflowers based on their excellent drought tolerance. All of North Dakota, Minnesota and parts of South Dakota have abnormally dry to moderate drought conditions according to the USDA Drought Monitor report as of January 24.

"The warm and dry winter is expected to continue through at least February. Markets will continue to watch South American weather and ultimate crop yields in the coming weeks. The dry soil conditions will come into play as the market begins looking at North American acres and planting prospects for this spring."
