Few Changes in Birdseeds

VANCOUVER - Jan 6/12 - SNS -- Birdseed ingredient markets were unchanged to slightly firmer on the week, with grower selling just meeting the short term needs of the market.

Discussing birdseed sunflower markets, SunPrairie Grain's Kayla Burkhardt said, "The sunflower market has been eerily quiet this winter. The birdfood market is having a tough time with demand. Keep in mind, the birdfood market finds much of its strength in the winter time from people wanting to feed the birds.

"Well, it's been a very mild winter thus far and people must feel that birds are quite capable of finding food themselves. From what I've been hearing in the marketplace, birdfood buyers do not have a lot of coverage, so a few good winter storms could spur some demand in this market and turn things around. However, with quiet crush demand and a lack of birdfood demand, sunflower prices are pretty much at the mercy of what happens in the crude, soybean and canola markets."
