Chickpea Markets Remain Firm
VANCOUVER - Sep 16/11 - SNS -- International chickpea markets remained firm through the past week, helped by deep concerns about damage to the Canadian crop and tightening stocks in other exporting nations.
Canada is a residual supplier of kabuli-type chickpeas, but with spot inventory running low in all countries, markets were hoping for a larger crop in North America than now appears likely.
Not only did chickpea plantings in Canada end up lower than hoped, the crop was seeded late. As a result, it was not fully mature when the first killing frost struck at the start of the week.
