Birdseeds Unchanged to Firmer

VANCOUVER - Jul 15/11 - SNS -- North American birdseed ingredient markets were unchanged to firmer in limited trading interest and underlying supply concerns for the coming marketing year.

New crop sunflower seed markets in North America remain at a discount to spot for oilseed sunflower. But, that spread shrank in the past week as the latest crop report from the USDA added weight to the belief this year's actual seeded area is lower than reported in June.

Though the crop report did not estimate sunflower area; steep reductions from the intended area were reported for some crops in North Dakota and Montana because wet soil conditions kept farmers out of their fields. Markets expect this to be reflected in a more widespread reduction in seeded area in the August crop report, which would be seen as a sign of the situation in sunflower. The USDA does not normally update sunflower seeded area until its October crop report.
