Birdseeds Firm on Lower Acreages

VANCOUVER - Jul 2/11 - SNS -- North American birdseed ingredient markets finished the week's trading with a firm undertone against reported reduction in millet and confectionary sunflower acreage in the United States.

This comes on the heels of Canada's seeded area estimates, which forecast a reduction in canaryseed plantings in that country. More importantly, wet field conditions prevented farmers in Saskatchewan from making much progress seeding crops the last half of June.

The USDA expects proso millet area to sink 18% to 320,000 acres this year. Confectionary sunflower seed acreage is expected to plunge 35% to 293,500 acres, while total sunflower area is down 5% at 1.86 million acres.
