Mixed Finish in Birdseeds

VANCOUVER - Mar 13/11 - SNS -- North American birdseed ingredient markets finished the week on a mixed note, with traders looking over their shoulders at the general weakness in agricultural commodity markets.

Canadian canaryseed markets reacted more strongly than other ingredients, a reflection of the fact the industry is export based and consumers are trying hard to avoid accumulating a long position at current values.

There is some optimism better returns to growers will pull land into the crop this spring, though the arrival of more winter storms in Saskatchewan could compound what is already forecast to be a wetter than normal spring run-off period. That could prevent farmers from seeding all land.
