Safflower Crop Dropped 9%

WASHINGTON - Jan 12/11 - SNS -- Production of safflower in 2010, at 221 million pounds, is down 9% from 2009, according to the USDA's final crop production estimates for the 2010 crop.

Growers planted 175,000 acres in 2010, unchanged from last year, while harvested area, at 167,700 acres, is up 1% from the previous year.

The yield, at 1,320 pounds per acre, decreased 142 pounds from 2009. California producers led the Nation, producing 125 million pounds of safflower, down 12% from 2009.
