Mixed Finish In Birdseeds

PANAMA - Jul 2/21 - SNS -- North American birdseed ingredient markets posted a mixed finish on the week, with sunflower influenced by strength in oilseeds and grains, while millet and canaryseed were preoccupied with seeded area estimates and growing conditions.

Activity in millet markets suggests thinking has largely switched to new crop. Seeded area was estimated at 600,000 acres, down slightly from 609,000 last year. Average yields would see production jump from 208,880 to 346,130 metric tons (MT). If realized that would place competitive pressure on a fraction of canaryseed seed among birdseed packagers.

Statistics Canada pegged this year's canaryseed area at 314,000 acres, up from 273,000 last year and roughly 19,000 acres above the previous year average. It is also sharply above initial intentions to plant 243,600 acres.
