Birdseeds Regain Firm Tone
PANAMA -Dec 4/20 - SNS -- Birdseed ingredient markets finished the week's trading on a firm note, with canaryseed and white proso millet posted modest advances, while sunflower was largely unchanged.
Markets were not surprised by the final crop production estimate for Canada, which pegged this year's canaryseed harvest at 160,600 metric tons (MT) from 273,000 acres, down from 175,000 from 290,900 acres last year. During the previous five year's production averaged 161,700 MT from 318,500 acres.
Statistics Canada only counts canaryseed production in Saskatchewan. It did not assign an additional 4,200 MT from 5,900 acres to specific provinces. Most of that was likely grown in Manitoba, judging from the fact farmers in the province are selling product to licensed grain elevators.
