Canaryseed Numbers Not Surprising

PANAMA - Aug 31/20 - SNS -- Birdseed ingredient markets were not entirely surprised by Statistics Canada's canaryseed production estimates for this year and the revision to last year's number.

It expects output this year to approach 150,000 metric tons (MT) from 268,000 acres, while last year's production estimate was boosted from 124,700 to 175,000 from 290,900 acres.

Average yields are expected to decline, reflecting the impact of a unusually hot growing season on the health of plants. The change from a survey to a satellite image based yield estimates likely resulted in a lower average yield than would otherwise be the case.

The change to last year's production estimate suggests the 2019-20 marketing year ended with 36,000 MT of canaryseed on hand, with the result this season could have an available supply of almost 186,000 MT, compared to 196,000 last season.
