Mustard Harvest Double Last Year

PANAMA - Dec 10/16 - SNS -- Canada's mustard seed harvest ended up around 233,900 metric tons (MT), almost double the 123,400 grown last year, according to Statistics Canada's final crop report for 2016.

The official estimate was significantly lower than suggested by yield estimates from provincial agriculture departments. Part of the difference likely stemmed from the fact the harvest was only 79% complete when Statistics Canada began surveying farmers.

Normally, over 99% of the crop is in the bin by the time the final numbers are being compiled. The implication is up to 20% of the final yields reported by growers were based on their impressions of what was in their fields and the possible impact of the wet and cold which prevailed at that time might have on crops in their fields.
