Modest Reduction in Kharif Forecast

VANCOUVER - Sep 16/15 - SNS -- India expects this year's monsoon or kharif season pulse harvest to be smaller than last year, continuing a recent downtrend in the quantity of pulses grown.

This year's kharif harvest is currently expected to reach 5.56 million metric tons (MT), down from last year's 5.63 million MT result.

Markets were expecting to see a higher production estimate because farmers boosted land in pulses. As of September 11, farmers had planted 11.0 million hectares, compared to 9.92 million at the same time last year and the recent five-year average of 10.52 million hectares.
