Excellent Seeding Progress

REGINA - May 21/15 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's pulse crops made excellent progress during the past, with farmers matching the previous 10-year average, judging from the latest Saskatchewan Agriculture Crop Report.

Seeding of all crops is now 64% complete, well above the previous five-year average of just 24% by the May 18. Producers in the southwest are most advanced, with 86% of the crop seeded. In the southeast, 66% is seeded; the west-central region has 72% seeded; the east-central and northeastern regions have 42% seeded; and northwestern region has 68% seeded.

Topsoil moisture conditions on cropland are rated as 10% surplus, 68% adequate, 20% short and 2% very short. Moisture conditions vary throughout the province.

Precipitation varied across the province, ranging from nil to 49 mm. Cool dry weather has delayed germination and crop development in many areas. Frost was reported in many areas and producers are assessing damage at this time. Producers are hoping for warm weather.
