India's Pulse Estimate Slashed

VANCOUVER - May 13/15 - SNS -- India's agriculture department slashed the projected size of the 2014-15 pulse harvest to just 17.38 million metric tons (MT), down 12% from last year's 19.78 million MT crop.

India's Department of Agriculture and Cooperation pegged total foodgrain production from last year's kharif and this year's rabi crops at 251.12 million MT. Rice production is expected to total 102.54 million MT, wheat – 90.78 million MT, and corn or maize 22.74 million MT. Oilseed output is expected to total 27.38 million MT, including 10.7 million MT of soybeans, 6.64 million MT of groundnut, and 6.75 million MT of rapeseed and mustard.

The cotton harvest could reach 35.32 million 170 kilogram bales, while sugarcane output is forecast at 356.56 million MT. Production of jute and mesta is estimated at 11.49 million bales (of 180 kg each) which is marginally lower than their production during the last year.

Last year's below average monsoon hurt yields for the 2014 kharif crop. More significantly, this year's rabi season crops were seriously damaged by unseasonal rains and hailstorms.
