India Made Record Seeding Progress

VANCOUVER - Aug 1/14 - SNS -- Farmers in India made excellent progress planting this year's kharif season crops, but total area remains well below last year and the recent five-year average.

In its latest progress report, India's agriculture department said land in all kharif season crops now stands at 70.625 million hectares. Rice has been sown/transplanted in 22.156 million, coarse cereals in 12.078 million, and oilseeds in 13.736 million. The planting of sugarcane and cotton is also in progress. Sugarcane has been planted in 4.642 million and cotton in 10.484 million.

Land in pulses now stands at 6.719 million hectares, compared to 7.95 million at this time last year and the recent average of 7.964 million hectares sown by the end of July.
