Strong Finish To Canada's 2013-14 Season

VANCOUVER - Jul 25/14 - SNS -- Canada's 2013-14 marketing year ended on a relatively strong note in the face of improved demand once last winter's transportation problems seemed to be cured by the return of warmer weather.

Final export numbers for the marketing year will not be available until the day before Statistics Canada releases it ending stocks estimates in September. Data available from the Canadian Grain Commission points to a strong finish for lentil exports, but a weak one for bulk peas. Overall movement of peas is harder to derive from the bulk data this year, because a higher proportion of the crop was shipped in containers.

Knowing what was exported in June and July is critical to accurately estimating Canada's carryover of pulses and other specialty crops. Another vital number is domestic usage, especially by the livestock feed sector. Unfortunately, public data is not available. Feed usage can only be derived from opening stocks, hard data for usage, and the carry-over.
