Kharif Seeding Well Behind Normal

SINGAPORE - Jul 7/14 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's kharif season pulse crops in India has fallen significantly behind normal, reflecting the slow development of this year's monsoon rains in much of the summer cropping area in the country.

At 750,000 hectares as of July 4, land in pulses is running roughly one million hectares behind last season's pace as well as the recent five-year average for the first week of July.

This is the most important month for sowing kharif pulses. Normally, around 58% of the monsoon season pulse crop is sown in July. On average 20% of the crop is sown in August and the remaining 5% in September.
