U.S. Pea Area Soars

WASHINGTON - Jul 11/12 - SNS -- Field pea plantings in the United States ended up at 600,000 acres, just shy of the 619,000 farmers planned to seed this year, according to the USDA's latest crop report.

Seeded area is up sharply from last year's 362,000 acres. Last year's acreage was down because farmers in North Dakota were unable to finish seeding crops because of widespread flooding.

In North Dakota, planting began in early April, two weeks ahead of the 5-year average. As of May 20, planting was 98% complete and 81% was flowering as of July 1. Condition of the crop was rated 78% good to excellent.
