Doubts Build Over India's Summer Crop

VANCOUVER - Jul 6/12 - SNS -- This year's monsoon got off to a slower than normal start and the precipitation outlook through July 13 suggests that it will continue to develop slowly across the country.

With the exception of pockets in northeastern India, the U.S.-based National Centers for Environment Prediction is looking for rainfall accumulations in the coming week to be 25% to 75% below normal for the nearly all of India and Pakistan.

This could further slow seeding progress for this year's kharif or monsoon season crops. As of July 6, India's farmers have planted 1.304 million hectares of pulses. This is down sharply from the 2.259 million hectares planted by July 8 last year; but well above the 822,100 hectares by this time in 2010.
