Rain Slowed Saskatchewan Seeding Pace

VANCOUVER - Jun 1/12 - SNS -- After an excellent start, seeding progress has slowed in Saskatchewan, with markets beginning to worry about forecasts for additional rain in the coming week across much of southern Saskatchewan.

As the past week got underway, Saskatchewan Agriculture said 74% of all crops had been planted, up from 64% the previous. Interestingly the difference between this year's seeding progress and the recent five-year average narrowed. The previous week, seeding was 20 points above average, but only four percentage points this week.

Overall, the provincial agriculture department said 71% of all crop were seeded in southeastern Saskatchewan, 80% in the southwest, 59% in the east-central area, 73% in the west-central area, 80% in the northeast, and 86% in the northwest.

A large amount of precipitation across the province has stopped seeding for a couple of days to a week. Precipitation varied from less than one inch to over four inches in some areas. Producers in southern and eastern regions are dealing with very wet soil conditions.
