Massive Increase in U.S. Peas

WASHINGTON - Mar 30/12 - SNS -- Field pea growers in the United States want to massively increase land in the crop to a 619,000 acres, with most of the increase coming from North Dakota, where farmers could not finish seeding last year's crops, according to this year's seeding intentions report from the USDA.

Though total area would be up 71% from last year, it remains 18% below the 756,000 acres sown in 2010 and well off the record 925,6500 acres planted in 2006.

The USDA noted that if this increase is realized, this season will be the first since 2008 to show an increase in area planted from the previous year.
