Uneasy Finish For Birdseeds

VANCOUVER - Jan 28/12 - SNS -- North American birdseed ingredient markets finished the week's trading on an uneasy note, with a softer undertone noted in many product because of poor end-user demand.

This was clearly stressed by SunPrairie Grain analysts Kayla Burkhart, who cautioned, "Sunflower demand continues to struggle as there is literally very little demand for birdfood flowers and the crush focuses on canola. Canada is expected to have big canola acres in 2012 but this will likely match the seemingly ever increasing demand."

This is expected to have a clear impact on the types of sunflower grown in Manitoba this year, with growers indicating a preference for oil-type over confectionary.
