Saffflower Plantings Sink 21%

WASHINGTON - Jun 30/11 - SNS -- The United States' planted area of safflower decreased 21% from 2010, to 137,500 acres in 2011, according to the USDA's seeded area estimates for 2011.

This is the lowest planted area for the Nation since records began in 1991. Area for harvest is forecast at 131,500 acres, down 22% from last year.

Compared with last year, growers in Montana, North Dakota, and Utah planted less acreage, while California is the only State reporting an increase.
