South Africa Beans Down 40%

PRETORIA - Feb 26/16 - SNS -- Farmers in South Africa managed to plant more dry edible beans than intended, but total area remains far behind last year, according to the South Africa Grain Information Service (SAGIS).

Preliminary seeded area estimates pegged this year's area at 25,500 hectares, compared to initial intentions to plant 51,500 hectares.

Instead, farmers managed to plant 36,400 hectares of dry edible beans, down from 64,000 hectares last year. Seedings are at their lowest level in over 30 years and under 40,000 for only the third time in that period.
