Moderate Rabi Season Planting Progress

NEW DELHI - Dec 28/15 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's rabi season crops made moderate progress during the week ending December 23, according to data from the country's agriculture department.

At 52 million, land in all crops is one million hectares behind this time last year. Land in pulses is up 1.4% from this time last year at 12.595 million hectares. Even so, total area is roughly 800,000 hectares below the recent five-year average.

Seeding of rabi season crops wraps up by the end of February. On average, farmers in India will plant another 1.85 million hectares of pulses. In recent years, seeding progress has ranged between 1.19 and 2.38 million hectares.
