Above Average Rabi Planting Progress

DELHI - Dec 11/15 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's rabi season pulse crops pushed ahead of this time last year for the first time in several weeks as India's farmers made excellent progress planting crops.

Just over 1.4 million hectares of pulses were sown during the week, lifting total land in pulses to 11.45 million hectares, up from the 11.1 million sown by this time last year, but behind the recent five-year average of 12.16 million hectares.

Normally, 80% of all rabi season pulses which will be sown in India, are in the ground by this time in December. In recent years, the amount of pulses sown after the 10th of December have ranged between 2.1 and 3.83 million hectares. The average is just over three million.
