Modest Gain in Dry Bean Production

WASHINGTON - Dec 10/15 - SNS -- This year's dry edible bean harvest in the United States is now pegged at 29.7 million cwt (100 pound units) or 1.35 million metric tons (MT) up 2% from last year, according to the latest USDA production estimates for 2015.

Planted area is estimated at 1.76 million acres, up 2% from 2014. Harvested area is forecast at 1.71 million acres, 2% above the previous year. The average United States yield is forecast at 1,743 pounds per acre, a decrease of 10 pounds from last year.

In North Dakota, harvest was 97% complete by October 4, well ahead of the previous year and the 5-year average of 60%. During the season, most of the crop was rated in good to excellent condition.

In Michigan, harvest was complete by the end of October, ahead of last year's pace. Most of the bean crop was reported in good to excellent condition. Nebraska's harvest was 96% complete by October 11, the same as a year earlier.
