No Real Surprise in Production Report

PANAMA - Dec 5/15 - SNS -- Statistics Canada's final crop report for the year was not a shock, with increases in yields from previous reports well within market expectations.

Based on its survey of 26,400 Canadian farms between October 21 to November 12, Statistics Canada boosted production of all pulses and other special crops 4.5% to 6.25 million metric tons (MT). The bigger number is consistent with the improvements in average yields reported by provincial agriculture departments through the harvest period.

The biggest changes from the previous report included a 10% increase in the lentil harvest to 2.37 million MT; a 17% drop in chickpea yields for a 83,500 MT crop; and a 29% jump in canaryseed output to 152,600 MT.

Statistics Canada pegged the field pea harvest at 3.171 million MT down 720,000 MT from last year's 3.791 million MT harvest.
