Slow Rabi Seeding Supports Peas

PANAMA - Nov 21/15 - SNS -- International field pea markets are closely watching progress seeding this year's rabi season pulse crops on the Indian subcontinent.

Farmers in India made significant progress planting pulses, with total area jumping from 3.9 to 7.4 million hectares during the past week. However, total area remains below last year and the recent five year average of 7.7 million hectares planted by the third week of November.

Below normal moisture reserves, unusually hot weather in key pulse producing states, and delays harvesting kharif season crops are contributing to slower than normal progress in Uttar Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh.

In two key rabi season pulse producing states, seeded area is lagging last year by 750,000 hectares in Madhya Pradesh and by 337,000 hectares in Rajasthan.
