India's Pulse Imports Rise 6%

VANCOUVER - Nov 17/15 - SNS -- India's pulse imports are up 6% so far this calendar year at 2.57 million metric tons (MT), while exports are down a third at almost 108,500 MT.

Between January and August, a 7% drop in field pea imports was more than offset by a near doubling of chickpea purchases, according to data published in the platinum version of STAT.

Significantly, while field peas remain the most important pulse imported by India, the commodity's share of imports has fallen to 33% so far this year, down from 37% during the same period last year.

By contrast, chickpeas increased their share of total imports from 8% to 13% and the lentil share grew from 17% to 20%.

As expected, pulse exports were dominate by chickpeas. With limited exceptions, India has banned exports of all pulses except kabuli chickpeas. Even so, kabuli chickpea shipments so far this year are down sharply, falling from almost 139,000 to 89,000 MT.
