More Optimism About Canadian Yields

PANAMA - Oct 8/15 - SNS -- Average yield projections by provincial agriculture departments in Canada remain above those coming from Statistics Canada and some market participants.

The latest estimates from Saskatchewan suggest this year's pulse and special crop harvest is 258,000 metric tons (MT) higher than the last projections from Statistics Canada, with the biggest differences being in the estimated size of the field pea and canaryseed crops.

Provincial forecasts are based on a different methodology than Statistics Canada. Instead of contacting individual farmers, crop reporters develop average yield estimates for their region, which are compiled into a provincial average.

The latest estimate comes at a time when the harvest for many crops is virtually complete. Of all crops grown in Saskatchewan, 84% are now in the bin and another 12% is swathed or ready to straight-cut.
