Slow Bulk Pea Movement in June

VANCOUVER - Jul 28/15 - SNS -- Canadian bulk field pea exports sank in June, with unofficial data from the Canadian Grain Commission (CGC) showing port clearances were down 25% from the previous month and down 45% from the same month last year.

Unofficial data shows that 149,400 metric tons (MT) of peas were loaded to bulk conventional vessels from licensed terminals and directly primary elevators in June, compared to 270,100 MT the same month last year and 198,600 the previous month.

Bulk conventional port clearances have trended lower in recent months, reflecting tight stocks on farms in western Canada and some anxiety about selling on the part of growers with peas left in their bins. Limited data is available for July, but it suggests bulk field pea movement is down sharply and that the pace of movement will not pick up until the harvest gets underway in August.
