Defensive Mood in Field Peas

VANCOUVER - Jun 6/15 - SNS -- North American field pea markets finished the week's trading in a defensive mood in the face of tightening old crop stocks and poor growing conditions in much of Saskatchewan.

Plants in many pea fields are shorter than normal for their stage of development, raising doubts about whether yields can reach their recent averages.

It may be case that the yield potential of up to 31% of the field pea crop has been permanently impaired. But, the degree of loss will also be influenced by conditions going forward.

Heat and timely rains would offset some of the damage caused in fields that are suffering, while helping retain the yield potential of fields that are in good to excellent condition.
