Market Moving Report Season

VANCOUVER - Apr 18/15 - SNS -- Next week's seeding intentions report from Statistics Canada and the March 31 stocks in all positions report which will be released on May 6 have the potential to significantly affect prices through the end of the marketing year.

Markets are most interested in Canadian seeding intentions, because that will help set the tone for new crop markets; while the stocks in all positions estimates give market participants a better view of what the country has available to sell before the coming harvest.

Both sets of numbers are frequently controversial. However, seeding intentions are best viewed as an effort by growers to gauge market reaction to their thoughts. Even though seeding is normally underway by the time the report is released, many farmers have finalized their plans all their fields, changes can still be made depending on market reaction and weather conditions.

The difference between seeding intentions and what markets expect could be more pronounced this year. Since the survey, there have been significant moves in some commodities, which will have had an impact on what farmers end up planting.
