Rail Backlog Starting to Drop

VANCOUVER - Apr 16/15 - SNS -- Canada's railways continue to make progress on decreasing outstanding orders for hopper cars from field crop shippers in western Canada, according to the last data accumulated by the Ag Transport Coalition.

During the week ending March 22, the railways supplied 52%, or 4,062 of the 7,801 hopper cars ordered for delivery that week. This compares to 46%, or 3,391 of the 7,430 hopper cars ordered for delivery the previous week.

The actual number of cars spotted at loading facilities in the country was 8,195 cars, including 4,052 for CN Rail and 4,143 for CP Rail. The total included 4,133 cars which were ordered in prior weeks. Since the start of the 2014-15 marketing years, each CN Rail has spotted an average of 3,600 cars per week and CP Rail 3,500.

Since the start of the marketing year, the two railways have not supplied 23,182 hopper cars ordered by shippers for a shortfall of 9%.
