Limited Progress Reducing Backlog

VANCOUVER - Apr 8/15 - SNS -- Canada's railways made limited progress on decreasing outstanding orders for hopper cars from field crop shippers in western Canada, according to the last data accumulated by the Ag Transport Coalition.

During the week ending March 15, the railways supplied 46%, or 3,391 of the 7,430 hopper cars ordered for delivery that week. This compares to 47%, or 3,498 of the 7,444 hopper cars ordered for delivery the previous week.

The actual number of cars spotted at loading facilities in the country was 7,024 cars, including 3,826 for CN Rail and 3,198 for CP Rail. The total included 3,633 cars which were ordered in prior weeks. Since the start of the 2014-15 marketing years, each CN Rail has spotted an average of 3,600 cars per week and CP Rail 3,500.

Since the start of the marketing year, the two railways have not supplied 23,813 hopper cars ordered by shippers for a shortfall of 10%.
