Railways Start Reducing Backlog

VANCOUVER - Apr 1/15 - SNS -- Canada's railways are still not making progress on decreasing outstanding orders for hopper cars from field crop shippers in western Canada, according to the last data accumulated by the Ag Transport Coalition.

During the week ending March 8, the railways supplied 47%, or 3,498 of the 7,444 hopper cars ordered for delivery that week. This compares to 37% or 2,302 of the 6,228 hopper cars ordered for delivery the previous week.

The actual number of cars spotted at loading facilities in the country was 7,594 cars, including 4,188 for CN Rail and 3,406 for CP Rail. The total included 4,096 cars which were ordered in prior weeks. Since the start of the 2014-15 marketing years, each railway has spotted an average of around 3,600 cars per week.

Since the start of the marketing year, the two railways have not supplied 23,995 hopper cars ordered by shippers for a shortfall of 9%.
