Brazilian Pulse Imports Plunge

Sep 23/14 - SNS -- Pulse imports by Brazil were down sharply during the first eight months of this year, with official data from Scavage, Foreign Trade Statistics, reporting a 62% drop from last year to just over 101,000 metric tons (MT).

Data contained in the platinum version of STAT reveals imports surged in 2012 and 2013 as Brazil took advantage of competitive black bean offers from China. Purchases from that origin offset the steep drop in imports from Argentina in 2013, caused by the Argentine drought and resulting crop failure.

This year's recovery in Argentine bean production was accompanied by a shift in import activity, with purchases from Argentina rising significantly in July and August. This was largely black beans.
