U.S. Bean Harvest 38% Complete

WASHINGTON - Sep 22/14 - SNS -- Dry edible bean harvest activity remains behind normal throughout much of the United States, but national harvest progress is similar to last year, judging from the latest state level crop progress reports from USDA NASS reporters.

For the state's reporting harvest activity, a combined total of 38% of this year's anticipated dry edible bean harvest is now in the bin, compared to 40% at this time last year.

Despite recent wet and cool conditions, farmers in Michigan made fairly good harvest progress during the past week, with 17% of the state's dry edible bean crop now in the bin. Mild frost was reported in the northern part of the state, but the extent of damage was minor.

Varying degrees of frost damage was reported throughout much of Minnesota, but crop conditions remained largely unchanged. So far, 96% of the dry edible bean crop is fully podded, with 86% of the crop at or beyond the coloring stage. Dry edible bean harvest, at 18%, is 11 days behind average. Dry edible bean conditions remained unchanged at 53% in good to excellent condition.
