Weather Slows U.S. Bean Harvests

WASHINGTON - Sep 16/14 - SNS -- Dry edible bean harvest activity is behind normal throughout much of the United States, with progress in the most important producing states slowed by last week's frost events and rainfall activity, judging from the latest state level crop progress reports from USDA NASS reporters.

Michigan's harvest was delayed by rain and cold temperatures during the past week, but had no impact on the overall condition of the crop, which remains in mostly good to execellent condition.

Light frost arrived in Minnesota Friday night into Saturday morning, leaving farmers unsure of the impact on crop yields, according to USDA's National Agricultural Statistics Service. So far, 91% of the dry edible bean crop is fully podded, with 67% of the crop at or beyond the coloring stage. Dry edible bean condition decreased to 53% in good to excellent condition.

North Dakota also experienced frost during the past week, with average temperatures three to five degrees below normal. Freezing temperatures affected late season crop development in some areas. Dry beans dropping leaves was 88%, ahead of 80 last year and 71 average. Harvested was 16% behind
