Record Pulse Area in India

VANCOUVER - Jan 17/14 - SNS -- This year's rabi or winter season pulse area in India is already a record, with farmers having sown 15.617 million hectares as of January 17, 2.9% more than the last year's final tally of 15.17 million hectares.

The final tally will not be known until the end of February, but there is little reason to doubt total area will push past 16 million hectares. In recent years, farmers planted between 258,000 and 958,000 hectares of pulses between the middle of January and end of February.

The most important rabi season pulse is desi chickpeas. In recent years, that crop has accounted for 72% of total rabi season pulse output. On average, moong accounts for 3% of the rabi crop, while urad accounts for 4%. The balance includes kabuli chickpeas, red lentils, field peas, and other pulses.
