Modest Improvement in U.S. Bean Harvest

WASHINGTON - Dec 9/11 - SNS -- The dry edible bean harvest in the United States ended up at 19.7 million cwt (100 pound bags equivalent) or 895,024 metric tons (MT) for 2011, down 38% from 2010, according to the USDA's latest crop report.

This is the second smallest edible bean harvest since 1990 and only the fourth time in that period that production has dropped under one million MT.

The crop estimate is up slightly from the October crop report, which thought the harvest would end up just under 889,000 MT.

The USDA noted that planted area ended up closer to 1.21 million acres, down 37% from last year. Harvested area is forecast at 1.15 million acres, 38% below the previous year. The average United States yield is forecast at 1,719 pounds per acre, a decrease of 7 pounds from 2010.
