U.S. Edible Bean Crop Down 38%

WASHINGTON - Oct 12/11 - SNS -- This year's dry edible bean crop in the United States is forecast at 19.6 million cwt (100 pound units) or 888,744 metric tons (MT) for 2011, down 38% from last year, according to the USDA's latest crop production estimates.

The USDA did not break down production by class, but given initial seeded area estimates by class and the states where seeded area changed from the previous report, it is obvious that most classes were affected by the acreage reduction. One key reason is that the changes in planted area were weather- not market-driven.

Planted area is estimated at 1.20 million acres, down 37% from the previous year. Harvested area is forecast at 1.12 million acres, down 39% from the previous year. The average United States yield is forecast at 1,744 pounds per acre, an increase of 18 pounds from 2010.
