Pulse Area Down in India

VANCOUVER - Nov 28/14 - SNS -- Seeding of this year's rabi season crops in India has fallen behind last year contributing to expectations total pulse production for the country's 2014-15 marketing year will be down significantly.

The latest seeded area estimates from India's agriculture department reveal land in all rabi season crops totals 36.094 million hectares, compared to 39.588 million as of November 29 last year.

Land in pulses is down 8.6% at 9.593 million hectares. The most important winter season pulse is gram or chickpea. Farmers have so far planted 6.385 million hectares, down from 7.579 million last year.
