Smaller N.A. Pulse Supply

VANCOUVER - Nov 13/14 - SNS -- Available supplies of pulses in North America will be down over last year unless production estimates for Canada and the United States are boosted when the final numbers are available in December and January.

Seeded area was up significantly over 2013, but yields ended up closer to their long term averages, falling well below the record yields reported in Canada last year. The net effect was that while seeded area was up 17% at 10.496 million acres, combined production for the two countries appears to have fallen 4% to 8.771 million metric tons (MT).

The latest crop production estimates from the USDA did not help. They revealed that U.S. lentil output is down 35% at almost 147,700 MT; while this year's field pea harvest was up 7% at just over 756,400 MT.
