Record Indian Pulse Crop Nears

NEW DELHI - May 16/14 - SNS -- India's Government forecasters are not backing down from forecasts of record food grain and pulse production across the 2013-14 production season, which includes last year's kharif season crop and the rabi season harvest now underway in the country.

Total food grain output is now pegged at 264.38 million metric tons (MT), up from 257.13 million MT last year and just ahead of the second advance estimate of 263.2 million MT.

Many crops are believed to have set production records this year, including: rice at 106.29 million MT; wheat 95.85 million MT; tur 3.38 million MT; gram or chickpea 9.93 million MT; all pulses 19.57 million MT; maize or corn 24.19 million MT; cotton 36.50 million bales; and jute 10.82 million bales.
